Title
DRESS HOOK
Description
English:

An incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy dress hook probably dating to c. AD 1550-1700.

The fastener consists of an oval plate with two perforated lugs for attachment. These lugs are close to the middle of the plate and have holes with a diameter of c. 4.0mm. From one narrow end of the plate is a projecting rectangular hook section which has been broken at the turn of the hook. The opposite end of the plate is broken irregularly. The front of the plate is decorated with a border of small annulets with a floral design in the centre. The reverse of the fastener is plain.

The fastener is 31.1mm long, 32.2mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 5.30 grams.

Similar artefacts can be seen published by Read (2008: 171, Nos. 640-3), which he classifies as his Class A, type 2, and suggests an early Post-Medieval date range. These each have a third attatchment knop at the opposite end to the hook which is now missing form this example.
