Title
DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Description
English:

An incomplete Post-Medieval copper alloy dress hook probably dating to c. AD 1550-1700.

The fastener consists of an oval plate with two perforated lugs for attachment. These lugs are close to the trapezoidal attachment loop. This fastener is broken on its outer edge. The opposite end of the plate has another circular attachment lug pierced by a circular hole.

The front of the plate has chip grooved decoration The face bears central design which is unclear but lies within an oval border which itself contains about 11 bezants.

The fastener is 37.1mm long, 21.6mm and weighs 6.03 grams.

Similar artefacts can be seen published by Read (2008: 171, Nos. 640-3), which he classifies as his Class A, type 2, and suggests an early Post-Medieval date range although that with the cloest decoration is classified as a Class A Type 8 (Read 2008: 175, Nos. 663).
