Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 18th century paintings with biblical themes exhibited in the vestibule/porch of the Kristiansand Cathedral (Norwegian: Kristiansand domkirke) in the city of Kristiansand, Norway.
  • "I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink" (Matthew 25:35); "I was sick and you looked after me" (Matthew 25:36); "I was in prison and you came to visit me" (Matthew 25:36); "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat" (Matthew 25:35).
The series of paintings on these walls were originally front panels on the organ loft of the previous cathedral. They were probably painted by Gotlieb Preuss, who decorated the choir and the royal chair in 1748.
When the cathedral was refurbished in 1868, the paintings were removed because they clashed with the artistic ideals of that time. They were exhibited in a town museum and thereby survived the fire that destroyed the cathedral in 1880.
During a comprehensive refurbishment of the present cathedral in 1959/1960, the paintings were moved back and put on display here in the church porch.
Some of the paintings show the Christian mercy acts described in Matthew 25. Others illustrate well known stories from the Bible: The Fall of Man, the sacrifice of Isaac, the shepherds' worship of the baby Jesus and Christ on the cross.
  • The gray brick church was built between 1882 and 1885 on the site of the previous church, which was destroyed by fire in 1880. It follows a cruciform plan in the Neo-Gothic style, designed by architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer. The church measures 70 meters in length, 39 meters in width, and stands at a height of 70 meters, making it one of Norway's largest cathedrals. It has a seating capacity of approximately 1,000 people, with the altar located in the west.
