Description

This is Norway’s first medallion made to the Royal Norwegian Society of Science and Letters in 1776.The medallion was used as a decoration awarded by the king for meritorious service within agriculture. Work than included correct fertilizing and building farmhouses out of stone were particularly appreciated.

King Frederik the 6th of Denmark-Norway took initiative to create a decoration that should premiere farmers in accordance to the Danish tradition. Initially the farmers received money for their service, but developed into a decoration with two different levels; one “to carry” and one “to own”.

The most distinguished medallion “to carry” was only handed out four times. Lars Forset from Klæbu, father of the parish clerk, church-builder and a representative at the Norwegian Constitutent Assembly in 1814, was one of the recipients and received the medallion for “the increasement of fertilization”.

The second medallion “to own” was not as distinguished and was awarded to far more persons, possibly as many as 120, before the tradition was ended in 1805.

The medallions is made from pure silver, measures 46 mm diameters and weighs 45 grams. On the front there is a picture of Christian the 7th.
