Summary

English: The famous Japanese Bridge covered bridge of Hoi An. It is a curved, structure of wood and tile, its roof has served as a shelter from sun and rain for the past 400 years.
According to legend, there once lived a terrible monster called Cu. The monster was so large it had its head in India, its tail in Japan and its body in Vietnam. The trouble was that whenever the monster moved, floods or earthquakes struck. In the 1590s the covered bridge was built in Hoi An to link the Japanese side of town with the Chinese side. As the story goes, the bridge was built across the weakest part of the beast and as a result killed it. The kind-natured people of the town took pity on the slain monster and erected a temple in the middle of the bridge to honour the great beast. Hoi An, Vietnam |
