Title
DEV-E90D25 Medieval zoomorphic ewer spout
Description
English: Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout. The spout dates from the 15th to 17th centuries, and is likely to be of Flemish or German origin. Ewer spouts of this date were made separately to the body of the ewer, to which they were then welded (Lewis, 1987- see reference below). The front of the spout is in the form of an animal’s head with two oval raised ears and two eyes and a snout. A pipe extends from the animal’s open mouth, through which liquid would have flowed. The rear of the spout is undecorated and slopes downwards to form a large curved opening, which is where it would have been welded to the ewer body. The spout is very similar in form to a 15th century spout recovered from the moat of Cardiff Castle, (Lewis, 1987). Diameter of pipe at mouth: 8mm; Length from snout to back of animal's head: 25mm. Overall length from end of pipe to the 'shoulder', where the spout begins to curve: 48mm. Length of the curved section of pipe which would have been fixed onto the ewer body: 54mm. Width of pipe: 16.5. Average thickness of metal pipe: 3mm.
