Description
English: Medieval gold penny of 20 pence of Henry III (1216-72) dating to AD 1257, moneyer: William of Gloucester (William Fitz Otto), mint: London, North 1000 (Evans obverse die 1). Discovered (by metal detector) on cultivated land near Hemyock, Devon by Michael Leigh-Mallory, 26 September 2021. Weight: 2.951 g. Diameter: 23 mm. Wear: slightly worn/very fine. Type certainty: certain. Ref: North 1994: 227; Evans 1900: 220, pl. XI no 1. Ref additional: The Guardian, 24 January 2022: ‘I owe it to the kids’: coin found by detectorist dad sold for £648,000.
