Object history
Deutsch: Der im mittleren Kandertal auf altem Siedlungsboden gelegene Ort wird in einer Urkunde des Klosters St. Gallen 874 erstmals als Witringhove erwähnt. Zum Basler Lehen der Herren von Rötteln gehörig, kam das Dorf 1315 an die Markgrafen von Hachberg-Sausenberg und 1503 an die Markgrafen von Baden. Im 18. Jahrhundert soll die Gemeinde einen spitzen Turm mit der Initiale W als Wappen geführt haben. Das Ortssiegel des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt ohne Umschrift den badischen Wappenschild unter einem Fürstenhut und von zwei Lorbeerzweigen umgeben. Das gleiche Bild enthält der Farbstempel des 19. Jahrhunderts. Das Generallandesarchiv entwarf das seit 1906 von der Gemeinde verwendete Wappen, das mit dem badischen Schrägbalken auf die jahrhundertealten Herrschaftsverhältnisse, mit der Pflugschar auf die Bedeutung der Landwirtschaft hinweist, die, auf guten Böden und in geschützter Lage betrieben, noch heute die Gemeinde kennzeichnet.
