Description
Deutsch: Wappen der früheren Gemeinde und späteren Stadt (seit 1966) Erkrath von 1938 - 1977: „Unter silbernen (weißen) Schildhaupt, darin ein schreitender blau gekrönter, bewehrter und bezungter roter Löwe, in Blau eine silberne (weiße) Brücke über einem aus zwei an den Schildrändern ansteigenden grünen Bergen gebildeten Tal.“
Das 1938 vom Oberpräsidenten der Rheinprovinz genehmigte Wappen des Heraldikers Wolfgang Pagenstecher zeigt die 1936 fertiggestellte Autobahnbrücke der heutigen Autobahn 3, die die Höhen des Düssel- und Neandertals verbindet und wird gleichzeitig der Bezeichnung Erkraths als "Tor des bergischen Landes" gerecht. Der bergische Löwe ist das Wappentier der ehemaligen Landesherrn des Herzogtum Bergs.
English: „Azure a chief argent, an armed, langued and crowned azure lion passant gules, above a valley vert with a bridge Argent.“
The arms were granted and devised in 1938. The lion in the upper part is the lion of the counts of Berg, who owned the area. The lower part shows the bridge which was opened in 1936 and connected the Düssel- and Neander-valleys. The town already had a nickname as the gate to the land of Berg, which is also symbolised by the bridge.
