Português: D. Sebastião 16 Rei de Portugal. (1554-1578) D. Sebastião (1554-1578), sétimo rei da dinastia de Avis, neto do rei João III (1502-1557) de quem herdou o trono com apenas três anos. A regência foi assegurada pela sua avó Catarina da Áustria (1507-1578) e pelo cardeal D. Henrique de Évora (1512-1580). Aos 14 anos assumiu a governação manifestando grande fervor religioso e militar. Solicitado a cessar as ameaças às costas portuguesas e motivado a reviver as glórias do passado, decidiu a montar um esforço militar em Marrocos, planeando uma cruzada após Mulei Mohammed ter solicitado a sua ajuda para recuperar o trono. A derrota portuguesa na batalha de Alcácer-Quibir em 1578 levou ao desaparecimento de D. Sebastião em combate e da nata da nobreza, para além dos dois rei de Marrocos, o que levou esta batalha a ser conhecida pela Batalha dos Três Reis, iniciando a crise dinástica de 1580 que levou à perda da independência para a dinastia Filipina e ao nascimento do mito do Sebastianismo, mas também à unificação de Marrocos. |
