Português: D. Catarina de Bragança. Bronze de Audrey Flack (1931-), 1998 D. Catarina de Bragança (Vila Viçosa, 25 ago. 1638-Lisboa, 31 dez. 1705), filha do duque de Bragança, que foi o rei D. João IV (1604-1656), nasceu em Vila Viçosa e foi rainha de Inglaterra, através do seu casamento com Carlos II (1630-1685), entre 1662 e 1685, tendo ficado inúmeros retratos oficiais seus, quer dos pintores oficias da corte de Inglaterra quer das suas oficinas. Após a morte de seu marido, regressou ao nosso país em 1693 e por duas ocasiões foi regente de Portugal, nomeadamente, em maio de 1701, quando seu irmão, o rei D. Pedro II (1648-1706) comandou o exército português na Guerra de Sucessão Espanhola e, em 1705, quando o monarca adoeceu gravemente. Mandou levantar paço próprio, no então Campo Real, hoje Bemposta, em Lisboa, onde hoje se encontra a sede da Academia Militar. Em frente ao antigo Paço da Rainha foi inaugurada em 2002 um seu busto de bronze assente sobre pedestal em pedra, obra da autoria do escultor britânico Tim Fargher (1952-), que foi oferecida à cidade de Lisboa pela British Historical Society of Portugal, por ocasião dos 50 anos da visita da rainha Isabel II (1926-2022) a Portugal e do seu jubileu. |
