Title
D-shaped BUCKLE
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy buckle and plate. D-shaped buckle with separate copper-alloy spindle secured through drilled frame. There is a further vertical bar inside the frame with a rectangular notch, onto which the missing pin would have rested. There is a moulded zoomorphic head on the outer edge of the frame, with small ears and an open jaw. Around much of the upper surface of the frame is a central recess, with traces of niello within it. The cast rectangular plate has concave upper and lower sides and is split 6mm from the end to hold the strap. The upper surface is decorated with six columns divided by plain bars and opposing transverse mouldings, giving a herring-bone effect. The lower plate was broken in antiquity at the point where it splits from the main plate, and was repaired with three silver rivets. L: 45 W: 19 Wt: 10.16g
