Les travaux de démolition des anciens bâtiments et l'élaboration des nouveaux plans durèrent près de dix ans. Ce fut en 1706 seulement qu'on commença de construire l'hôtel de Soubise, où se trouvent maintenant les Archives nationales. La direction en était confiée à l'architecte Delamaire. Dans son Architecture françoise, Blondel fait le plus grand éloge de cet artiste, dont les conceptions ne manquaient pas de grandeur, comme on peut s'en rendre compte, non seulement par l'examen de l'hôtel de Soubise, mais encore des hôtels de Pompadour et de Duras, également bâtis par cet architecte. Façade de l'Hôtel de Rohan (côté du jardin) LES DE ROHAN ET LE PALAIS-CARDINAL 175 sous le nom de prince de Rohan. Il était né en 1674. Successivement chanoine de Strasbourg, en 1690, puis évèque in partibus de Tibériade et coadjuteur de l'évêque de Strasbourg, le prince Egon de Furstenberg, en 1701, et successeur de ce prince au siège de Strasbourg, en 1704, il fut élevé à la pourpre cardinalice, l'année même de la mort de son père. Le prince de Rohan aimait le faste et la magnificence. II ne voulut point se contenter d'occuper une partie de l'hôtel de feu le prince de Soubise, et décida de se faire construire une demeure personnelle. Delamaire venait précisément de terminer l'hôtel de Soubise. Le cardinal Armand-Gaston-Maximilien de Rohan le chargea donc de lui édifier, en bordure de la rue Vieille-du-Temple et au fond des jardins de l'hôtel de Soubise, une résidence qui fût complètement distincte de la précédente, tout en permettant de se rendre facilement de l'une à lautre, sans détour
