Summary

Description

Cyrtaspidichthys ovata (Bryant, 1932) - fossil fish from the Devonian of Wyoming, USA.

Also known as Cyrtaspidichthys ovatus and Protaspis ovata.

This Devonian fossil jawless fish from Wyoming is an agnathan with a bony exoskeleton. All agnathans are jawless - they represent the oldest-known, ancestral fish group. Agnathans are still alive today and include the hagfish. Early agnathans with bony exoskeletons are often called ostracoderms. The fossil shown here is a rare specimen of Cyrtaspidichthys, a fish with a dorso-ventrally compressed body, consistent with a benthic swimming lifestyle.

Exhibit info.: Protaspis belonged to an early group of jawless fish (Heterostraci) which evolved during the Early Silurian. They are characterized by having large dorsal and lateral plates as well as ventral plates covering the anterior region of the body and no movable jaw parts at the mouth. Although this group became extinct by the end of the Devonian, two groups of jawless fish survive today, the lampreys and hagfish.
