English: New, potentially threatening orchid viruses and their possible routes of infection
Viruses are generally considered a serious problem in orchids. Infected plants are less resilient than their healthy counterparts and they bloom less profusely. Although orchid viruses rarely cause death, there is no cure for them, which means that infected plants will remain a source of infection indefinitely. There are about 28 orchid viruses, of which only two, Cymbidium mosaic virus (CyMV) and Odontoglossum spot virus (ORSV), have been studied in any detail. (Inouye, in press; Lawson and Brannigan, 1986; Lesemann and Vetten, 1985; Wisler, Zettler, and Mu, 1987; Zettler et al., 1984).
