Title
Cylindrical lead weight
Description
English: Complete lead weight of indeterminate date. The weight is of squat cylindrical form with a 'suspension' loop (now flattened) projecting from the centre one of the ends.

Lead weights, when found outside of an archaeological context, are notoriously difficult to date. It is also rarely possible to assign a specific function to these objects and therefore they are best classified simply as weights. Examples of lead weights from controlled excavations, have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman era through to the Post Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period.

It is possible that this item is a steelyard weight, which are usually dated to either the Roman or Medieval periods, but the form of the loop is unusual and these are normally formed of a separate iron rod passing through the centre of the lead weight.

Unfortunately no measurements were recorded for this item.
