In works where only a limited amount of pure water is re-quired, it is sometimes the practice to condense direct steam fromthe boilers, or indirect steam that has already been used for heat-ing purposes or otherwise. In this way a comparatively purewater is obtained, but its purity cannot always be depended upon,as oil, which is volatile with steam, is likely to get into it in vari-ous ways, and iron rust from steam pipes occasionally causestrouble. 221. Theamount of evaporation varies, being but little upon a cold dampday but very great upon a warm and dry day. As the warm air, partially saturated with moisture, rises, it eventually becomescooled to a point where a large proportion of the moisture it holdscondenses out as clouds, which, being carried about by the variouscurrents of air, constantly increase in density until they become soheavy that the water falls to the earth as rain.
