Text Appearing Before Image:
n in the form of pulleys and couplings, and as this factor is always greatly exceeded by that of the strainingbelts, which are necessarily short and must therefore be kept at atight tension in order to transmit the required amount of power toeach machine, the resultant of these two forces, weight and strain, becomes of great moment. To provide an adequate resistance against these forces at thispoint, therefore, it will be noticed in the drawings that the main, orlower cross rail web has been quite heavily ribbed both top andbottom, making it of the I beam form in section. In addition tothis provision for strength ifi the rail itself, its ends are seen to depend 310 KNIT GOODS FINISHING 17 gradually to their points of connection with each tubular upright mem-ber, thus giving the rail an arch form in outline, and providing amplestrength for its purpose in any direction. The well known provision for adjusting each hanger in its railfor the purpose of aligning the shaft is shown in section.
Text Appearing After Image:
The upper cross rail which supports the wooden top, is providedwith a wide flange on its upper edge, through which the screws thatsecure the top are passed. Its mid-section is supported through twoextensions of the web which connect respectively at two points on the 311 18 KNIT GOODS FINISHING upper side of the lower rail. Both these rails and the two tubularupright members are combined in one integral casting, and there areno joints for the purpose of adjustment whatever, excepting the onefor the purpose of aligning the shaft. It is no doubt convenient, and sometimes necessary, that verticaladjustment for the tables top be provided, but-where it is not neces-sary, it is doubtful if this provision is a practical one, for if not fastened very securely, such adjustablejoints are soon out of place, and the tables top deflectedthereby as badly, or worse, than any floor would settle inyears. So if a table can beerected without them, it wouldbe rigid to the utmost limit, and, thereafter, never
