aryfrom a few feet to a few hundred feet in 687 altitude, and have resulted from the long-continued denudation of mountainous lands.From New York southward to Florida the low-lands are smooth and consist of strata whichare geologically young and which have sufferedno deformations. They were parts of the con-tinental shelf and have become land by theslow emergence or uplift of this part of thecontinent. The same type of surface continuesas the Gulf plains through the southern states,and along the eastern border of Mexico. Thesurface slopes gently to the sea, is moderatelydissected by streams, and many of the rivershave tidal courses. At the inner edge of theplain the rivers descend abruptly from thePiedmont or higher ground on the west, atwhat is called the Fall Line. Examples arethe falls of the Potomac above Washington andthe rapids of the James at Richmond. Becauseit marks the head of navigation, a number ofcities have developed at this point on various PHYSIOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA

Eastern Highlands.—This name covers in ageneral way the mountain ranges and plateausof the eastern United States and eastern Can-ada. As a rule both the rocks and uplifts areancient and hence by prolonged denudation thesurfaces have become well matured and sub-dued both in form and altitude. In this cate-gory belong the low, worn mountains of theLabrador peninsula, of eastern and northernQuebec, and of the maritime provinces. The United States contains mountain rangesof several different periods. Of very ancientorigin, renewed by later uplifts, are the WhiteMountains and some other uplands of NewEngland; the Adirondacks and Hudson high-lands of New York; the highlands of New Jer-sey, and the Blue Ridge and Unakas of thesouthern states.
