293 A. HOAKS VELOCIPEDE, The important part of the specification is as follows:^^ The shaft-gearing of these spur-wheels consists ofimpact roller motions, so that the crank centrally onthe shaft, within easy reach of the operator upon theseat and between the driving-wheels, may be effectuallyoperated by the hand, and a lever from the guide-wheelis designed to be in such a position as to be within easyreach of the operators feet forwardly, so that no diffi-culty will be encountered, all of which will now be fullyset forth. ^The operation of this device is very simple. Theoperator seated within the machine operates the crank0 of the shaft L, and the spur-wheels iV, engagingwith the spur-wheels J, move the vehicle forward. The steering-wheel C is operated by the feet in connec-tion with the lever E.^^ It is all right, except that it would seem cruel tohave such legs as the draughtsman has given the rider, and only use them for steering purposes. 26* 294 CyCLING ART, ENERGY, AND LOCOMOTION.

ANOTHER BIG WHEEL IDEA. 295 BURBANK SPECIFICATION. By thus providing the bicycle with a circular trackengaging the driving-wheel the said track forms virtu-ally the driving-wheel of the bicycle or velocipede, andas it is of very greatly increased diameter as comparedwith the driving-wheel of the velocipede, it enables themachine to be driven over rough and uneven roadswithout violent bumping and jolting, and without dis-comfort to the rider. It also prevents the velocipedefrom being overturned when it encounters an obstruc-tion, and prevents the rider from ^ taking a header/ When the machine encounters a stone or other ob-struction, the frame M is moved rearwardly against thepressure of the spring L, and thus causing the wheelB and the rider to be moved forwardly past the centreof the circular track for a corresponding distance, thusenabling the weight of the rider to be utilized in causingthe circular track to pass over the obstruction. This patent is a fair sample of the big-wheel i
