There are onlv a few of us left. 3IF KINGDOM FOR A HORSE. 253 ^ This invention relates to a new and useful improve-ment in velocipedes, and consists in the method inwhich power is applied for driving it. Power is applied to this ratchet by means of thepawls / and g^ the former of which is pivoted to theframe hj and to which the saddle i is attached; theother pawl is pivoted to the frame J, to which thefoot-pieces h are attached. ^ When the weight of the rider is thrown either uponthe saddle or upon the foot-pieces, the pawls act uponthe ratchet-wheel, and rotate the axle. As before stated, motion is given the velocipede byworking the pawls in the ratchet-wheel, as the weightof the rider is thrown alternately upon the saddle andupon the foot-pieces. This operation gives him the motion and exerciseof a horseback ride.
