Total observed species richness is in yellow. Inset shows significant relationship between distance from the equator (expressed as positivized latitude) and the proportion of identified species (logistic regression; β = 0.113 (βse = 0.0488, eβ = 2.306), p = 0.0211, McFadden's R2 = 0.72). Studies with a high proportion of identified species (which are largely found in temperate regions) are relatively easy to evaluate for community similarity, while studies in regions with more poorly developed taxonomy (e.g., the tropics) may not be as easily reconciled. This roadblock can be bypassed using the cyberdiversity framework, which allows data on the whole community to be made publically available, and can foster reconciliation of independent inventories, including those with high proportions of undescribed species. Data from Colombia [62], Brazil [63]–[65], Denmark [54], Guyana [39], India [66], Mexico [67], Peru [56], Portugal [57]–[59], Tanzania [68], and United States [55], [60], [61]. In some cases, specimens representing morphospecies from these studies have been subsequently described in taxonomic publications [112], [113]. |
