Cuve baptismale revétue de mosaïques de l'église de Vitalis fondée au 5ème siècle Vitalis était un fidèle, il a offert cette cuve avec un autre fidèle appelé Cardela, leurs noms figurent sur le rebord de la cuve. Le complexe épiscopal chrétien de Sufetula a été construit sur un édifice antérieur. Il est composé de deux églises, de sacristies, d'un baptistère, d'une chapelle et de thermes privés. L'ensemble date du 5ème - 6ème siècle après J.-C. La ville antique de Sbeïtla, fondée sous l'empereur Vespasien (69-79), s'appelait Sufetula, un nom d'origine libyque. Sa période de prospérité est le 2ème siècle (culture de l'olivier, carrefour routier). À l'époque byzantine, la ville occupait une position stratégique, elle comprenait de nombreuses églises et monuments. Les arabes l'ont conquise à la fin du 7ème siècle.
