Pair of green chintz curtains which were brought to N.Z. circa 1823, by Mary Ann Williams (Mrs. James Preece, Church Missionary Society) and which had belonged to her mother" (ocm) Drapes brought from England to NSW in 1828 and to New Zealand in 1831. They were originally owned by Mrs Jane White (Mary Ann Preece's mother) and were drapes for a 4-poster bed. See notes by Marnie Spicer Mary Ann Williams left Bristol with mother and step-sister in 1828; arrived Parramatta 1829; worked as Matron School of Industry for circa 3 years; then recruited by CMS (Marsden or Yates) to work at as assistant at CMS girls school Paihia – later transferred to Kerikeri and following marriage to James Preece in January 1833, transferred to Waimate. Mary Ann Williams brought these curtains, which had belonged to her mother, to New Zealand when she emigrated. Mary Ann Williams had married James Preece, a fellow missionary at Kerikeri on 25 January 1833. Mary Ann and James opened mission stations at Puriri and Parawai near Thames, at Ahikereru in the Urewera mountains and at Whakatane. |
