headed in England. 26. THE CHAIR OF IDRIS. On the very summit of Cader-Idris (a mountainpeak in Merionethshire, Wales) is an excavation inthe solid rock, resembling a couch. It is said to be thechair of Idris the giant, after whom the mountain wasnamed. Tradition says, that whoever rests for a nightin this seat will be found the next morning either dead,or a raving maniac, or endued with supernatural powers.This excavation is probably the Chair of Idris towhich Tennyson refers in Enid, where Geraintsays, — He felt, were she the prize of bodily force,Himself beyond the rest pushing could moveThe chair of Idris, as it is situated in what is supposed to have been KingArthurs territory, and as Geraint was a knight of hiscourt. 27. HISTORY OF THE STRASBOURG CLOCK. This famous astronomical clock stands in the southtransept of the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was constructed by Schwilgue, a celebrated Stras-bourg mechanic, between the years 1838 and 1842, toreplace an older clock made in 1574.

It con-tains a perpetual calendar, which shows also the feaststhat vary from year to year on account of their connec-tion with Easter Sunday. The phases of the moonand the eclipses of the sun and moon are calculated forall time. True time and sidereal time are also indi-cated, besides many other astronomical changes. Pre-cisely at a quarter to twelve, an angel standing on thetopmost gallery of the clock strikes the third quarteron a bell. When the hands point to twelve, one ofthe genii reverses an hour-glass, and Death strikes thehour. Beneath are the figures of Childhood, Youth,Manhood, and Old Age. Under the first gallery, Sat-urn, the symbolic deity of the day, steps out from aniche. Then the figures of the twelve apostles comeout on the gallery, while two doors flying open revealthe Saviour standing in a lit
