Description

Caribou peer down on hikers on the Pinnell Mountains National Recreation Trail in Alaska. "The caribou I encountered on the trail were seemingly curious animals," BLM Artist-in-Residence Brad DeFrees said. DeFrees hiked the 27-mile-long trail during his art residency in 2019. "Some would walk towards us to figure out what we were before darting off. Often times they would run out of sight only to reappear directly behind us, taking a second look. We came across many shed antlers along the trail, which both males and females grow and shed each year." Photo by Brad DeFrees, used with permission.
