294 , CURIOSITES MEDICO-ARTISTIQUES rebattu, et ils ont donné au contraste de la vie et de la mort undéveloppement parfois insolite. Les tableaux consacrés à sainte Madeleine sont la plupart trai-tés suivant ce principe. On sait que la grande pécheresse àlaquelle le Christ pardonna parce quelle aima beaucoup, étaitdune beauté angélique. Après la mort de celui dont elle suivit ledouloureux calvaire, elle se retira, non loin de Marseille, dans ledésert de la Beaume, où elle sabîma dans le repentir de ses fautespassées. Ses vêtements étant venus à sémietter. Dieu, dit lalégende sainte, fit pousser ses cheveux afin de couvrir sa nudité.Cest cet épisode de sa vie que les peintres ont le plus souventtraité. Ils nont pas manqué de placer auprès du corps sculpturalde Madeleine, la tète de mort édentée dont la sainte ne se séparaitplus, afin davoir toujours présente à Tesprit Tatroce vision de saruine future. Et vraiment cette impression nest pas si romantiquequo
