Cupola Smelt Mill

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cupola Smelt Mill Dating from 1792 this mill built by the Duke of Devonshire to smelt the dressed lead ore to produce the metal. The mill had a reverberatory (cupola) furnace which burnt coal and could run continuously. It replaced two earlier mills which ran on peat and wood, one of which was situated close to Linton Church. The Duke of Devonshire stipulated in letting his mining leases that ore had to be smelted here. A second reverberatory furnace was added in 1830 as well as a roasting furance and a slag hearth.
