Description

Panel 5 - Tow Row

Window 25: Because Psyche saw Eros, she has broken through the barrier dividing gods from humanity and is now able to see the gods. Psyche finds Demeter (whose symbols are grain and the harvest) and pleads with her to help her find Eros. Demeter is moved, but nonetheless sends Psyche away as Aphrodite demanded.

Window 26: Psyche finds Juno (whose symbol is the peacock), Juno is also moved but like Demeter sends Psyche away.

Window 27: Meanwhile, Aphrodite (right) complains to Zeus (seated) and summons Hermes (left), the messenger of the gods. She tells Hermes to go all over the worlds of gods and men to find Psyche and bring her back.

Panel 5 - Bottom Row

Window 28: Aphrodite given Hermes a note promising 100 gentle kisses from Aphrodite for anyone who turns in Psyche.

Window 29: Note – Window 29 is out of order in this series because it was mounted in a separate room of the castle. In Window 29, Psyche is captured and Aphrodite has her whipped. Psyche refuses to denounce her love for Eros, however, so Aphrodite sets a series of challenges (labors) that Psyche must complete.

Window 30: Note Window 30 is also out of order because it was mounted in a separate room. In classic style, the labors that Aphrodite assigns to Psyche are impossible. Window 30 shows Aphrodite ordering Aphrodite ordering Psyche to sort all the grain in the warehouse of the gods according to type. The ants take pity on Psyche, however, and carry each grain of wheat and barley to sort it into giant piles by type.

Window 31 (lower row, center): Aphrodite takes Psyche to her second labor and tells her that she needs some wool from the magic sheep with golden fleece and that Psyche must collect it for her. Psyche tries but is unable to cross the river.

Window 32: Psyche is once again distraught but a river nymph tells her that the nymphs won’t let her cross the river to the golden sheep because the sheep are magical and deadly. Instead of collecting fleece directly from the sheep, the nymph advises, go to a nearby woods where the sheep often walk and collect the golden wool that they shed onto bushes and branches as they walk through.
