Summary
[edit]DescriptionCup-marks on a boulder - geograph.org.uk - 981614.jpg |
English: Cup-marks on a boulder. This boulder is listed as being cup-marked; these markings are still present, but are now rather faint, and they may not be noticed during a casual inspection; see the end-note.
At first sight, the boulder seems to have little on it except for some modern graffiti, and a single deep depression that looks fairly modern. In such cases, where the markings are faint, they are best seen when the rock surface is illuminated by the sun at a narrow angle; maximum contrast is obtained when the sun is in front of the viewer, so that the far sides of the cups are in shadow. This photograph was taken looking west, late in the afternoon when the sun was becoming low in the sky. The entire boulder is shown here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/981645 For many more images, see the British Rock Art Collection website: http://rockartuk.fotopic.net/c1051121.html For more on cup-markings in general, see: 927206. |
