Title
Cuff link
Description
English: A post medieval copper-alloy cufflink, dating to c. AD 1662 - 1714. The object comprises of a single cufflink which is circular in plan, the underside has an integral attachment loop. The upper surfaces of the discs are stamped from behind with two hearts and a crown above on a stippled background. The reverse of the disc has an integral 'D' shaped silver loop attachment in the centre.

Dimensions: Diameter of disc 13.5 mm. Thickness 0.83 mm. Weight: 0.68 g

Discussion: Cufflinks and buttons with this design of crowned double hearts are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and marriage until the end of the century. Lewis (2013) argues that the design may have held royalist or catholic connotations and probably went out of fashion by 1714. Taking into account the similarity of design to other dated examples, these cuff links are likely to date between the later seventeenth century and the first decade of the eighteenth century.
