Español: Gabriel García Moreno, (Guayaquil, 24 de diciembre de 1821 - Quito, 6 de agosto de 1875), fue un estadista, abogado, político y escritor ecuatoriano, dos veces presidente constitucional de Ecuador. Los restos embalsamados de García Moreno, vestido con su uniforme de general y luciendo la Banda Presidencial fueron expuestos en el altar mayor de la Catedral. El presidente asesinado lucía un bicornio con plumas blancas y varias condecoraciones en el pecho. Una foto de la época muestra los ojos hinchados y la boca entrecerrada del cadáver, sentado en una silla al pie de la cual se puede ver su espada. Antes de morir, el presidente había promulgado el Código Militar, que establece los detalles del funeral del presidente muerto en ejercicio. Probablemente se siguieron estas disposiciones en su funeral de Estado. |
