Asterismo formado por las estrellas Epsilon Carina, Iota Carina, Kappa Vela y Delta Vela. Vela y Carina son dos de las cuatro constelaciones que forman la ex-constelación del navío Argos: Carina (la quilla), Puppis (la popa), Vela y Pyxis (la brújula). Cruz falsa porque en principio mucha gente la confunde con la Cruz del Sur al observar esta región del cielo austral, teniendo una di sposición estelar muy parecida a la de aquella y además de no indicar el Polo Sur Celeste. A 1º 45' de Delta Vela se encuentra el cúmulo abierto IC 2391, de diámetro 50' y de magnitud +2,5. También a 3º 17' de Koo She (Epsilon Carina) se encuentra el cúmulo abierto NGC 2516, de diámetro 30' y de magnitud +3,8. Ambos cúmulos son muy bellos de observar con binoculares o con un pequeño telescopio. Se la puede observar en todas las noches claras del año desde la latitud -33º hasta -90º, y solamente visible desde las latitudes +27º y en algunas épocas del año (fines de Primavera, Verano y principios de Otoño, del hemisferio Sur). En todo el Verano del hemisferio Sur se la ve primero, en linea Norte-Sur (Vía Láctea) antes que la Cruz del Sur. NOMBRES Y SIGNIFICADOS DE LAS ESTRELLAS: MARKEB (Kappa Velorum). Del árabe. Estrella de color blanco-azulado. ASPIDISKE (Iota Carinae). Del griego: "el escudo pequeño". Estrella blanco amarillenta. ALSEPHINA (Delta Velorum). Del árabe. Estrella anaranjada. AVIOR (Epsilon Carinae). Nombre moderno. |
