| Description |
Excavation of the auxiliary spillway continues at Folsom Dam in Folsom, Calif., Nov. 22, 2011. “Work starts at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 2:00 a.m., covering two 10-hour shifts six days a week,” said project engineer Larry Smith with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District. Smith added that the rock crusher (pictured) will move out of the spillway construction area on Dec. 5, to make way for the concrete batch plant. The plant will take four months to assemble and will mix concrete for the spillway control structure, Smith added. Once complete, the spillway will allow Folsom Dam to release water sooner and more safely. The project is part of the Folsom Dam Joint Federal Project, a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Central Valley Flood Protection Board and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency to improve the safety of the dam and reduce flood risk for the greater Sacramento area.
