Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Crumbling pillbox near Charlton Abbots View looks westwards from this spot high up on the Cotswold plateau. This re-inforced concrete structure standing at the top of a steep hill is like a WW2 type 23 pillbox in plan although no embrasures are immediately evident. The site enjoys excellent views in all directions over the Cotswolds and as far as the Malverns to the north-west. One can only speculate as to its original purpose but it seems likely it acted as an observation platform possibly with a light anti-aircraft machine gun in the open half of the structure. Records indicate that the nearest WW2 airfield was at Northleach some 7 miles distant.
