aw ice extendingout from the land in small and large floes, intermingled withbergs. (Aug. 20.) Three bears being seen on the ice I wentaway in the second cutter with Pirie and Beynan, and aftershooting the old she-bear and one cub we succeeded ingetting a rope round the larger cub and towing him to theship. Now began a most lively scene. ICE IN LANCASTER SOUND. 33 and the other cub warranted this supposition, as, being threetimes the size of the other, he could not have been of thesame litter. (Aug. 21.) We steered on towards the land about CapeHorsburgh; a considerable quantity of ice lying off thisremarkable promontory, or rather point, the glacier runningdown until almost to the sea level, and projecting out overthe low land. There is a singular conical hill to the north-ward of this glacier, which appears from the sea to be almostisolated. Passing round the floating ice, and groundedpieces, we saw several seals basking in the sun, and, goingaway with Lillingston and Beynan, I brought on board alarge bearded one,1 which we shot upon a high floe-piece. Intowing him off he revived, broke the rope, and disappeared, but shortly afterwards arose, quite dead. On approaching Cape Warrender,2 a dense fog came on,and at 10 p.m. I was suddenly called on deck, and found theship running amongst floes of ice. We immediately back
