Title
Cruciform brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval Cruciform Brooch, dating to AD 475 - 550. Most of the bow, pin, foot and catch plate of the brooch are missing. The head plate of the brooch comprises of a central trapezoidal panel, which is plain in decoration. The wings of the brooch consist of a sub-circular domes shaped knops, attached via a horizontal cylindrical bar on the rear of the catch plate, which would have supported the pin, this cylinder retains iron corrosion, from the iron pin.  At the top of the trapezoidal panel is a third knop which is similar in decoration to the others, but is integrally cast with a grooved circular collar at the base. At the base of the headplate extends the remnant of the bow which terminates at an old break. The bow projects forwards at a right-angle to the headplate and is rectangular in cross section. It is decorated with transverse ridges and grooves.
