pt as being the Avork of Dr. Rimmer. I have seen, how-ever, one miniature, executed at this time, exquisitely delicate in drawing andtender in color. The artist occasionally sold a picture for from ten to twenty dol-lars in Boston, in some auction; and he had occasional commissions to add cattle, orsome other accessory, to a landscape, for which quickly executed task he receivedusually two or three dollars. I was fortunate enough to discover one of thesetwenty-dollar pictures. Its sole merits were great distance and solid construction. While at Randolph, Dr. Rimmer worked with such intense zeal at his variousoccupations that he more than once fell from his shoemaking bench from sheerexhaustion. He earned enough to buy a small home, which, however, he soonsold, loaning to a needy friend the money received. Here, as elsewhere, his lifewas made up of extremes of happiness and sorrow.
