South entrance of St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. The crucifix was a gift from Leo Syntax, a parishoner of Church of the Annunciation -- a Greek Orthodox church in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. Syntax was stationed in Oberammergau, Germany, in 1945 and admired the work of the Lang brothers, local carvers. He commissioned the work, which was intended for his church in Cleveland. Syntax was unaware that Greek Orthodox churches only use icons, not crucifixes. It sat in his dining room for some months before he donated it to the cathedral. This is one of the few Lang Brothers works in America. Below the crucifix is a mural depicting some of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The south entrance to the nave is visible below that.
