Summary
[edit]DescriptionCrown point reflections - geograph.org.uk - 592803.jpg |
English: Crown point reflections Symmetry of the cast iron girders of Crown Point bridge reflected in the River Aire Leeds. The bridge spanning 120 feet was built in 1842 and the castings were made by Booth and Co, of Sheffield.
Richard Kay adds:- Only the outer pairs of arch ribs are cast iron, and the downstream ones (RH side) were substantially rebuilt in 1994 when new sections, cast in Burton on Trent by Lloyds Burton Ltd., were added. The 13 inner steel arch ribs, replacing the original cast iron ribs, form an integral part of the strengthened bridge, capable of taking modern traffic loading, The steelwork was fabricated and erected by Fairfield Mabey Ltd. of Chepstow. These changes took place when the bridge was widened by 5.5 metres in 1994/95. The span at the downstream face was increased by 5 metres to 41.6 m (136.5 ft) to accommodate barges on the navigable river Aire.
