Summary

[edit]
Description

They look like jewels made for a queen or a king. The three gold collars are the most splendid objects from prehistoric times in Sweden. They are dated to the 6th century and originate from the counties Västergötland and Öland. This one from Möne in Västergötland is made of seven tubular rings, each divided into halves and joined together by a hinge.

The spaces between the rings are filled with small miniature figures, humans and animals, almost invisible to the eye. Some have suggested that together they create stories on the necklace. The work is amazing; just imagine that the artisan made this masterpiece without a magnifying glass.

But has it been worn by a royalty? It is 23 cm in diameter and would have fitted badly, resting uncomfortable on the shoulders. We do not know, it is still a mystery. Somehow, the gold collar has been hidden away in the ground, forgotten and not found until the 19th century by a crofter.
