Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Crown Office head, Chambers Street. Portrait bust of George Combe (1788-1858), Edinburgh lawyer and disciple of Dr Johann Gaspar Spurzheim who introduced the 'science' of phrenology to the city in 1816. Combe was a co-founder of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society some time around 1822. In the following decade its membership rose to 600, of whom over 100 were medical practitioners. The Society's first museum occupied premises believed to have belonged to Combe near St Andrew Square, before moving, first to Surgeons Square and later to its new Museum in Chambers Street in 1878. http://www.archiveshub.ac.uk/news/phrened.html 1629071
