Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Crown Office head, Chambers Street. Portrait bust of Dr Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1828) of the University of Vienna. Spurzheim was a disciple of Dr Franz Joseph Gall, with whom he collaborated and co-authored works on the 'science' of Phrenology. He visited Edinburgh in 1816 to participate in a series of public debates in which he argued against detractors for the belief that the physical brain is the seat of the mind and that it can be divided into discrete, localised 'organs' responsible for the character traits that make up the individual personality. As these organs vary in size, information on personality can be gained even from analysing the external cranium. In the period 1825-50, the 'science' caught on to the extent that over 40 phrenological societies were established throughout the British Isles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Spurzheim 1629062
