Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Crowlink Gap The lowest point amongst the Seven Sisters. Until the 19th century it was possible to access the beach with a horse and cart which meant it was a popular beach for those indulging in the smuggling trade. The access has been lost to erosion along with sea battery and a coastguard watch house which once existed on the cliffs above. The beach was also the site of the wrecking of the Nympha Americana in 1747. The ship was a captured Spanish prize being taken from Portsmouth to London when it lose its way and foundered on the rocks here with a valuable cargo of mercury. The locals from the surrounding village descended onto the wreck carrying away both the valuable cargoes and much of the cedar wood timber the ship was built with which supplied joists for many local barns and made into furniture for others. I'd like to think the timbers in the beach are the remains but I have no evidence and are probably from a small jetty or pier.
