Title
Crotal Bell
Description
English: An incomplete Post-Medieval copper-alloy cast spherical bell, dating to c. AD 1600 - 1800. Three quarters of the bell remains. The bell comprises of two hemispheres, divided by a horizontal circumferential rib. The upper hemisphere is undecorated and has two circular sound holes.  At the top of the upper hemisphere is an integrally cast rectangular suspension loop with an arched as-cast aperture. A small part of the upper hemisphere is broken and cracked. The lower hemisphere is incomplete with half of it missing due to an old break. The remainder of the lower hemisphere is decorated with a cast "sunburst" pattern of radiating arched double stranded petals , each with a central vertical line. In side a double stranded semi-circular frame at the base of the petals is a letter 'W', one half of a makers mark.

Height: 51.92 mm
Diameter: 44.67 mm

Weight: 52.27 g

A bell with a similar type of loop  is recorded in record KENT-FB7CAF, where the author notess: Rod Blunt suggests a date of 17-18th centuries AD, based on the one piece design and integrally cast undrilled suspension loop and undecorated hemispheres.
