Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Crossroads. The photograph shows the crossroads in the centre of Thornton-le-Dale.

The village was originally called just plain Thornton - and still is by locals. 'Dale' was added to the name in the 1800s when railways came to the area so as to avoid confusion with other Thorntons in railway timetables and advertising. In the years between the First and Second World Wars, Thornton Dale was often voted prettiest village in Yorkshire and the -le- was added purely as a marketing tactic.

In the left, foreground is 442166 (to the south). To the left, beyond the New Inn, is Pickering Road (A170, to the west). Ahead is 441962 (to the north). To the right (very edge of the picture) is 441929 (A170, to the east).

The photograph was taken from a small, fenced area (part of 442177) that is grassed, has chestnut trees growing, an ancient cross, a set of stocks and benches. The shop, ahead on the corner is Ye Old Corner Shoppe and sells second hand books. The red brick building on the right, of which only the corner can be seen, is 441960.

Behind the viewpoint on the right is The Forge - housing a tea room, 442464.
