Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Figure 5. Cross sections from the Mississippi Fan (or Atwater) foldbelt, northeastern Gulf of Mexico. (a) Depth section through the western part of the foldbelt (Figure 9) showing a series of symmetrical, salt-cored detachment folds between welded synclines. The basinward fold is the same one shown in Figure 16a; the landward two folds, which are announced oil discoveries (Mad Dog and K2/Timon), are overlain by the allochthonous Sigsbee salt nappe, which itself accommodates some shortening at its toe. No vertical exaggeration;

interpretation by F. Peel. (b) Profile through the eastern part of the foldbelt (figure 2) showing both symmetrical, salt-cored detachment folds and faulted detachment folds. The small, shallow blobs of salt over the middle structure are parts of overhanging salt fed from diapirs off-section, similar to the diapir at the left end of the profile. No vertical exaggeration; interpretation by F. Peel. (c-f) Sequential restorations of the depth section in (b) carried out using the Locace software. Note the early deformation and overall salt

inflation (overburden thin compared to abyssal plain) in (e). No vertical exaggeration; restorations by F. Peel. Thin vertical lines in all panels are artificial construction lines; salt is in blue.
