Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cross-section of felled willow. Close-up of one of the stumps seen in 1778570. As I understand it, almost all the area is XYLEM: sapwood outside the dark ring transports watery sap upwards, inside the ring is heartwood which is not involved in transportation. Annual growth rings are more prominent in the sapwood: in total there were 35 or 36 rings in this 75cm diameter trunk. Just inside the knobbly bark is a medium-dark ring of PHLOEM which transports sugary sap up or down according to the season. Between Xylem and Phloem is a thin ring of darker VASCULAR CAMBIUM from which both structures grow.
