Limestones in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA. This is an outcrop of the Middle to Upper Mississippian Slade Formation in Kentucky. The unit was formerly known as the Newman Limestone ("They always change the names to protect the innocent!"). Slade Formation limestones are shallow ocean deposits. At this site, the basal preserved Slade Formation is the Warix Run Member, which consists of cross-bedded calcarenite limestones. "Calcarenite" refers to sand-sized grains of calcium carbonate - the limestone equivalent of a sandstone. Cross-bedding is evident here. Cross beds are tilted layers between horizontal layers. They represent sediment deposition in the presence of a one-directional current by wind or water. Underlying the Slade are maroon and gray shales of the Borden Formation's Nada Member (not visible in this shot). The Borden is a deltaic succession. The Slade-Nada contact is a significant disconformity - the entire Middle Mississippian is missing. This includes the lower Slade Formation (the Renfro Member is gone). Pennsylvanian-aged Corbin Sandstone (not visible in this shot) disconformably overlies the Slade Formation in this area. Stratigraphy: Warix Run Member, Slade Formation, Chesterian, Upper Mississippian Locality: roadcut next to the Route 1274-Route 801 intersection, southwest of the town of Morehead, Kentucky, USA.
