[edit]DescriptionCromwell Dixon grave - Green Lawn Cemetery (45325009571).jpg |
Grave of Cromwell Dixon at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States. Dixon (1892-1911) was widely known as "the youngest aviator in the world". As a boy, Dixon built a small rollercoaster for neighborhood kids and his own motorcycle. When he was 14, built a human-powered dirigible. At the 1907 International Balloon Race in St. Louis, Missouri, he won first prize after flying eight miles and crossing the Mississippi River. On his 17th birthday, he flew a home-made dirigible over Dayton, Ohio. By 1911, Dixon switched to heavier-than-air craft. He received his pilot's license (#43) on August 6, 1911. In September 1911, he flew his Curtiss Pusher airplane at a fair in Helena, Montana. On September 30, he flew 15 miles from Helena to Blossburg, over the Mullan Pass. Dixon became the first aviator to cross the Continental Divide and Montana Governor Edwin L. Norris presented him with a prize worth $10,000 ($300,000 in 2017 dollars). Dixon died on October 2, 1911, at the Interstate Fair in Spokane, Washington. His biplane encountered a strong downdraft, and plunged 100 feet to the ground onto the Northern Pacific Tailroad tracks. He died an hour later in the hospital. A monument commemorating his historic Continental Divide flight was erected in 1912. It was moved over the years and now stands in Morrison Park, southwest of the Helena Regional Airport. Cromwell Dixon Drive in Helena is named after him. |
